Philip Pullman will be speaking at the Save Our Libraries event in Oxford Town Hall tomorrow. We’ll also be hearing from Steve Squibbs (library worker and Unison rep) and Stephanie Kitchen (local library user and campaigner). The meeting has been organised by Oxford Save Our Services and is open to everyone.
The women gathering in the hotel lobby were obviously going to a really good party. There were two cowgirls and several pirates plus a bee, a princess, Snow White and Tinkerbell. But even Alice in Wonderland couldn’t tear my attention away from the usability-themed drama unfolding outside.
There was an eerie moment during the last Oxford Geek Night. Russell Davies (no, not that Russell Davies) was telling us that journalists in the print media love to write about Newspaper Club because its focus on printing suggests that newspapers aren’t dead after all. Russell’s response? He played us a sound file with robot voices singing.
I really should have mentioned this a month ago, but my slight shock at events overcame my instinct to report them.
At our October AGM, I had the honour of being elected chair of the Oxford & District NUJ Branch. I’ll be following in the experienced footsteps of Peter Cann, who I’m glad to say will be staying on the branch committee as vice-chair. (In other words, we’ve effectively swapped roles.)
The spending cuts we’re facing today will not only be the largest since World War II, but perhaps also the most heavily spun. Finding out the real impact of the cuts means going beyond the press releases and searching for the small print in lengthy documents.

What’s causing the current unemployment problems? According to Iain Duncan Smith, it’s a failure to look beyond your home town for work. He gives the example of Merthyr Tydfil, whose inhabitants “didn’t know that if they got on a bus, an hour’s journey, they’d be in Cardiff and they could look for the job there”.
I’ve just been looking at the Google Analytics report for this site and spotted that some visitors found me while searching for “robert dyas anti fungal paint”. Of course, those visitors will end up on this page, which is a blog post about how I couldn’t find any anti-fungal stuff in Robert Dyas. (I would advise caution before reading the blog post; the tale may be too thrilling for web users of a sensitive disposition.)
