An English drinking song gets the Oulipo treatment by an Oxfordshire writer. J-P Stacey takes the folk song Show me the way to go home and twists it 99 different ways in a homage to Raymond Queneau’s Exercises in Style.
The result? 99 different songs, some following the pattern of Queneau’s Exercises and others based on completely new ideas. Even better, all the songs can be heartily sung to the tune of the original, although some might prove tricky if you’ve had a tipple too many.
As a taster, J-P will be uploading a new song to his website every day throughout Advent, in text and podcast form.
[Full disclosure: I liked this writer so much I married him.]
